(Wild 1894, 49 as Mr et Mme de Bussière et leurs filles). Note: Wild’s entry most likely refers to Marie-Théodore Renouard, Vicomte de Bussière (1802-62), his wife, née Octavie Humann; and their two daughters, Marie-Madeleine Renouard de Bussière, Comtesse de Leusse (1837-1916), and Athanasie Georgina Renouard de Bussière, Comtesse de Sugny (1830-). As he did not inherit the title until 1848, it is possible that the portrait dates ca. 1840-1848. While the Renouard de Bussière were a large family, Marie-Théodore and Octavie were the only couple with two daughters at that time. As usual, further research is required to ascertain whether the entry refers to a single group portrait, a set of four portraits, or a combination of single and group portraits.

76. Marie Jean Pierre Hubert, Duc de Cambacérès (1798-1881)
Size and present location unknown; Wild 1894, 51: Mr le Duc de Cambacières, 3 enfants
NOTE: This is presumably a portrait of Marie Jean Pierre Hubert, Duc de Cambacérès (1798-1881). As the Duke did not have any children, it is possible that “3 enfants” referred to in the above entry are the Duke’s great nieces Zénaïde (1857-1934) and Jeanne de Cambacérès (1858-1909), and great-nephew Maurice, Comte Delaire de Cambacérès (1855-1906). Given the birth years of the children, the portraits were presumably painted from the late 1850s to early 1860s. It is also possible that“3 enfants” may refer to the portrait of the three Basset de Châteaubourg children [q.v.], who were great-nieces of the Duchesse Louise de Cambacérès (1799-1883).
77. Louise Fontenilliat, Baronne Levavasseur (1801-85)
Size and present location unknown; Wild 1894, 51: Mme de Lavarasseur; although there were several women by that name living at the time, the sitter is most likely to be Marie-Anne-Louise Fontenilliat, Baronne James Levavasseur (1801-85), mother of the Duchesse de Conegliano (q.v.).

Size and present location unknown; Wild 1894, 51: Comte de Bondy et son fils avec 3 enfants. This is most likely either a group portrait or several individual portraits of Pierre Marie Taillepied, Comte de Bondy (1766-1847), his son and three grandsons; the date of the portrait is thus most likely to be after the birth of the youngest grandchild, 1840, and the patriarch’s death in 1847. The portraits of the children are most likely those exhibited at the Salon of 1844 (q.v. no 108a below).

99. Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil (1825-1891), mid to late 1870s (ca. 1876-77)
Pencil on paper, 28.5 x 25.0 cm
Private Collection; Wild 1894, 52: as above. Note: the portrait was formerly incorrectly attributed as a drawing by F.X. Winterhalter (FXW no 303). On the basis of the image, the Emperor looks like he is in his 50s. This would mean that the portrait probably dates from the 1870s. This would also coincide with the fact that Pedro II was in Europe and visited Germany between 1871 and 1872, and then again between 1876 and 1877. Purely on the basis of the image, I believe the correct date for the drawing should be around 1876-77, when the Emperor would have been about 50-52 years old (this also corresponds with the photographs of the Emperor taken around this time). Thus this could only be a work by Hermann Winterhalter, as Franz Xaver died in 1873.
